The resounding success of Lepanto, which ended the Turkish power in the Mediterranean, fueled the ambitions of John of Austria.

Perhaps to end his ambitions , the king sent him as governor to the Netherlands ( 1576 ) , as extremely difficult in that they had failed the Duke of Alba and Luis de Requeséns , unable to stop the Protestant rebellion ; to convince him hinted at later launch an invasion of Englan
d and to place as king of that country with Mary Stuart.
Don Juan soon realized what that project unfeasible , while daily failed in its attempt to contain the revolt of the Netherlands. Little was achieved with its commitment to withdraw Thirds and respecting the Flemish liberties for the rebels to recognize the Catholic faith and Spanish sovereignty ( Perpetual Edict , 1577 ) . He died of typhus contracted during a military campaign.
